Evenement Details

Bodurov Trio is a modern, dynamic jazz group, founded in 2001 by Bulgarian pianist and composer Dimitar Bodurov. Dimitar’s fascination with Bulgarian folklore evolved in a unique and distinctive style characterised by connecting folklore elements with contemporary jazz and classical composition.

Musicians:
Dimitar Bodurov – Pianist
Zach Lober – bass
Martin Hafizi – drums

“Stamps from Bulgaria”, the band’s successful project is a series of compositions based on traditional Bulgarian folk songs and dances, for which All about Jazz wrote: “The exploration on this set of Bodurov’s original compositions mixes jazz and Bulgarian folk together in a series of fascinating and enjoyable musical interactions. It’s a great sound.“

The first CD album of the series, Stamps from Bulgaria 2008 was released by Challenge records (NL) and was included in the top 10 releases of the year of the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant. Then in 2012 followed Seven Stamps, featuring the celebrated Bulgarian kaval player Theodosii Spassov. In Stamp Around (2016), samples from various folklore sources serve as inspiration. Dynamic, energetic, poetic yet more fluent and somewhat less eclectic.

The band will release their upcoming album Senkya padna in 2022. The opening track Senkya Padna (A shadow has fallen) was written during the first lockdown of the pandemic and it uses a sample from a grandma singing an archaic traditional song about “a great shadow that fell and covered three cities”. A coincidental metaphor on the current situation. Her mourning voice and the unsettling rhythmical and chord progressions reflect indirectly the state of fear, emergency and confusion we all fell into.
