Klassiek@West: Nadia en Esther ten Kate

Nadia en Esther ten Kate zijn jonge, opkomende talenten uit Brabant, die elkaar feilloos aanvoelen, doordat ze van jongs af aan samen musiceren. Zij hebben zowel veel als duo opgetreden als in andere combinaties, zoals met het Fresniatrio, met pianist Frans van Tuijl.

Nadia ten Kate (2000) kreeg al jong muziekles volgens de Kodaly methode en was lid van het Eindhovens Jeugdkoor. Op vijfjarige leeftijd begon zij met harp spelen en toen zij zes was kreeg ze ook vioolles van Nico Dezaire. In 2011 werd zij toegelaten tot de School voor jong talent van het Koninklijk Conservatorium waar ze les kreeg van Koosje van Haeringen. Sinds oktober 2016 heeft ze les van Vera Beths. Zij is in september 2018 begonnen met haar Bachelor opleiding aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Nadia nam deel aan meerdere nationale en internationale concoursen en won diverse prijzen waaronder een eerste prijs en publieksprijs bij het Prinses Christina Concours in 2014 en een eerste prijs en de Donemusprijs in 2017. In 2015 won zij de eerste prijs bij het Solistenconcours van Orkest Zuid. Nadia heeft deelgenomen aan verschillende internationale masterclasses, waaronder Stringtime Academy in Goch, Kloster Schöntal en het Peter de Grote Festival. Zij kreeg hier lessen van o.a. Peter Brunt, Stephan Picard, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Simone Lamsma, Ilona Sie Dhian Ho en Moshe Hammer. Naast haar studie aan het conservatorium studeert Nadia ook psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Esther ten Kate (1996) werd al jong gebiologeerd door de cello. Vandaar dat het voor haar vanzelfsprekend was dat zij cello wilde spelen en dat muziek een grote plaats in haar leven inneemt. Momenteel studeert zij in de master bij Pieter Wispelwey en krijgt regelmatig masterclasses van Dmitri Ferschtman. Ze begon op vijfjarige leeftijd met cello les en werd in 2006 toegelaten tot de Young Musicians Academy van het Conservatorium van Tilburg. De eerste jaren kreeg zij daar les van Frank van den Berg. Vanaf 2009 had zij les van Paul Uyterlinde. Haar opleiding heeft ze vervolgd aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, waar zij begon bij Floris Mijnders en Michael Stirling en haar Bachelor heeft afgerond bij Michael Stirling. Verder heeft zij masterclasses gevolgd bij o.a. Roel Dieltiens, Peter Bruns, Troels Svane, Gothard Popp, Filipe Quaresma en Harro Ruijsenaars. Zij nam deel aan diverse concoursen waaronder het Prinses Christina Concours. Hierbij won zij diverse prijzen waaronder een aanmoedigingsprijs, eervolle vermelding en de Gaudeamus-muziekweekprijs. In 2013 won zij de Young Talent Award van de Toonzaal in Den Bosch en het solistenconcours van Orkest Zuid. Orkestervaring deed Esther al jong op toen zij op 9-jarige leeftijd in een symfonieorkest begon te spelen. Gedurende haar middelbare schooltijd was zij lid van het JeugdOrkest Nederland, waar zij solocelliste was. Vanaf januari 2016 speelt zij in het Nationaal Jeugd Orkest. Hierdoor mocht zij o.a. in Schotland in samenwerking met het Hebrides ensemble en het National Youth Orchestra of Scotland in kamerorkestbezetting concerten geven. Ook mocht zij naar Wenen om kamermuziek te spelen in o.a. het prestigieuze Arnold Schönberg Center. De afgelopen twee jaar is zij academist bij het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest geweest.

Nadia and Esther ten Kate are young, emerging talents from Brabant, who feel each other flawlessly, as they’ve been making music together from an early age. They have performed both as a duo and in other combinations, such as with the Fresnia trio, with pianist Frans van Tuijl.

Nadia ten Kate (2000) started music lessons at an early age. She studied the Kodaly method and was a member of the Eindhoven Youth Choir. At the age of five she started playing the harp and when she was six she also took violin lessons from Nico Dezaire. In 2011 she was admitted to the School of Young Talent of the Royal Conservatoire, where she was taught by Koosje van Haeringen. Since October 2016 she has been taught by Vera Beths. She started her Bachelor’s degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in September 2018. Nadia participated in several national and international competitions and won several prizes, including a first prize and audience prize at the Princess Christina Competition in 2014 and a first prize and the Donemus Prize in 2017. In 2015 she won first prize at the Soloist Competition of Orkest Zuid. Nadia has participated in several international master classes, including Stringtime Academy in Goch, Kloster Schöntal and the Peter de Grote Festival. Esther ten Kate (1996) was fascinated by the cello from an early age. It was obvious to her that she wanted to play the cello and that music has a big place in her life. She is currently studying for a master’s degree with Pieter Wispelwey and regularly receives master classes from Dmitri Ferschtman. She started cello at the age of five and was admitted to the Young Musicians Academy of the Tilburg Conservatory in 2006. During the first years, she was taught there by Frank van den Berg. From 2009, she was taught by Paul Uyterlinde. She continued her education at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she started with Floris Mijnders and Michael Stirling and completed her Bachelor with Michael Stirling. She has also followed master classes with Roel Dieltiens, Peter Bruns, Troels Svane, Gothard Popp, Filipe Quaresma and Harro Ruijsenaars, among others. She participated in various competitions, including the Princess Christina Competition. She won various prizes, including an incentive prize, an honorable mention and the Gaudeamus music week prize. In 2013 she won the Young Talent Award from the Toonzaal in Den Bosch and the soloist competition from Orkest Zuid. Esther gained orchestral experience at a young age, when she started playing in a symphony orchestra at the age of 9. During her high school years she was a member of the Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, where she was a solo cellist. From January 2016 she plays in the National Youth Orchestra. As a result, she was allowed to give concerts in chamber orchestra concerts in Scotland in collaboration with the Hebrides ensemble and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. She was also allowed to go to Vienna to play chamber music in the prestigious Arnold Schönberg Center, among others. The past two years she has been an academic with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
